Picking up where his father left off

Randy’s father, Jack Augsburger, had a degree in architecture and metallurgy. He created pieces for the Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, the World Trade Center in Brussels, Belgium, and the Los Angeles Convention Center. Both the tank head and flat fish were first designed by Jack, but have since been further refined by Randy who also earned his degree in metallurgy. Solidifying this design as a local icon, one of Randy’s large tank head fish is hanging over Mission Creek in San Luis Obispo.

Just like in nature, each fish is unique

Each one is hand formed from plate steel and given its final appearance with a solvent based treatment, producing the bright and varied finish options are unique to that particular piece of art.

The natural rust finished fish are best suited for outdoor and coastal locations, while the colored fish are recommended indoors. Apply a fresh coat of beeswax or wood preserve that contains orange oil 2-3 times to keep your colored fish protected from the elements and maintain the finish.

More than just fish

While Randy continues to create these fish in his Templeton studio, he is always refining his craft, exploring new designs and techniques, and completing commissioned work for private and commercial clients.
